In their own words - Lerato Makhathini

November 10, 2016

Five years ago, I stepped into the grounds of the prestigious Jeppe High School for Girls with anxiety and a great deal of uncertainty about the future. Now, I walk through the corridors of Jeppe Girls not only with the black and white stripes on my back but with the spirit which has been embodied by those same stripes.

My experiences at Jeppe High School for Girls have been truly remarkable. I have gained insight into myself and the world around me through the many activities, which take place in the school. These range from being on the Matric Dance committee to taking part in the annual flower show and being part of the winning class of the 2015 class dances. I will carry the tremendous values of Jeppe Girls with me throughout my life.

A highlight of my time as a Ruth First Scholar was delivering a speech about Ruth First at the Ruth First Annual Memorial Lecture at Witwatersrand Art Gallery in 2012. However, my greatest moment of being a Ruth First Scholar is realizing the amount of growth, not only in the number of recipients of the Trust but in the foundation of the trust as well. Nelson Mandela once said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is the difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”. The Ruth First Trust has made a significant difference in each and every recipient’s life. It has given us the great value of receiving quality education at Jeppe High School for Girls.

My plan for 2017 is to venture into something completely different. I am going to be attend a course for Cabin Crew at the Cranfield Aviation Academy while looking at other career choices I can venture to in that area. I am planning on letting next year to be a time of self-reflecting and identifying where my passion really lies.
