We were absolutely delighted to have a chance to reconnect with Vanessa Ndiangang (RF2016), in August, at our Alumnae High Tea get together. We hold ‘get togethers’ with our alumnae twice a year and enjoy spending the time reuniting and reminiscing with those who are available and in Johannesburg. This year, Vanessa was spending some time at home during her University break and shared with us her journey since Matriculating in 2020:
“After graduating as a Ruthie of 2020, I was able to receive a scholarship under the Ashinaga Africa Initiative to study in the UK towards a Computer Science degree. The Initiative provides mentorship, leadership development training and funding to study in the UK, US, Japan and Brazil in various universities. My favourite part of being an Ashinaga scholar is meeting so many people like myself, from all over the continent, through the programme and being able to learn about different cultures across Africa from their experiences.

I am now studying towards a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science at the University of York. I started in 2022 and I am set to graduate in 2025 with a degree. The first part of the programme mostly focuses on fundamental topics in Computer Science. This was very helpful as I did not do Information Technology as a subject in school and outside of basic coding skills and an interest in tech generally, I was quite new to a lot of the concepts in computer science. After graduation, I am hoping to specialise in data science and combine my skills from my degree with entrepreneurship and sustainability in my career.
Aside from my studies, I have been able to take part in new hobbies, work on campus and explore the local area I live in. I especially enjoy being able to ride my bike around the entire town and stay out until the sunsets at 10 pm during the summer. It’s been fun to live in a safe, quaint town built with so many activities particularly catered to students. When I graduate, I am interested in continuing to study towards a Master’s degree.”
Alumnae Tshaamano Mabuba (RF2017), Sasha-Lee Morare (RF2012), Lerato Makhatini (RF2012), Francesca Martis (RF2014) and Rayaan Mwela (RF2017) at the August High Tea.
During her visit home, Vanessa spent some time giving back to the learners at Jeppe Girls and joined our Trustee, Pelonomi Moiloa, teaching coding with Code Kamoso.
We wish you everything of the best Vanessa and we are looking forward to the next time we get to catch up with you!
