An Afternoon for the Memory Bank

There are occasions when you realise that what you are experiencing is a privilege. A few hours of time that will never be forgotten, that leave you changed. Our time with Justice Albie Sachs, at our 2023 Annual Review Function, was exactly such an occasion.

Our present Ruthies, alumnae, new scholarship recipients for 2024 and guests left feeling inspired by the stories shared by close friend of Ruth First, Hillary Hamburger, and Patron of the Trust, Justice Albie Sachs.

In particular, Justice Sachs spoke of the privilege and responsibility he, and Ruth First, felt to give their lives to the struggle for freedom for all. He reflected that they both could have lived comfortable, luxurious lives but their consciences would not have allowed that and they had to sacrifice it all in order to keep their souls intact.

Looking at the Ruthies sitting on the stage, Justice Sachs smiled and said he is so pleased to see the South Africa he, Ruth First, and countless others fought for, sitting in front of him.

While much progress is still needed, opportunities such as those provided by the Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Trust, are making a difference. This privilege and responsibility is not taken lightly.

Thank you for your ongoing support. We appreciate every single one of you who make our work possible.
