On 11 March a heartwarming, sincere farewell was held for founder and manager of the Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Trust, Kevin Tait.
The Trust was launched in by Mr. Tait in 2010 and has provided secondary school education, of the highest quality, at Jeppe High School for Girls for more than 136 girls. Alumnae, current learners, mentors, Trustee members, volunteers and Jeppe Girls staff members paid tribute to the remarkable work Kevin has undertaken in the “twilight” of his stellar career in education:
“Ruth First’s own qualities provided a good portrait of Kevin, of his ethical and professional orientation, his skill set and his general approach to life.” – Professor Isabel Hofmeyr (former Chairperson of the Trust)
“Mr. Tait has been the face of the Ruth First Scholarship Programme since 2010. Every letter, every communication, and every decision has been made by him over this period … Thank you, Kevin for your dedication, your commitment, your passion, and your vision.” – Jackie Standish-White (former volunteer and ‘right-hand woman.’)
“Thank you, Mr. Tait for helping me see that I am capable of being so much more than just a ‘netball meisie.’ Because of your belief in me, now I’m studying Actuarial Science!” – Tshaamano Mabuba (RF2017)
“My fondest memory of Mr. Tait would be the time and energy that he put into each individual girl. For me in particular, I struggle with ADHD and was struggling with my studying. And he sat me down and worked an hour-by-hour study programme out with me. I still use it today in university!” – Dominique Meysel (RF2012).
“Mr. Tait, you have been like a father figure for me.” – Evelyne Mabussi (RF2019)
“Thank you for taking a chance on me and for always rooting for me. I would not be where I am today without you, and that’s why I give back by being a mentor for the current Ruthies.” – Basetsana Mfono (RF2016)
“Mr. Tait, you have had such an impact on my life! Because of you I am determined that I will make a success of my life. When I am working one day I will come back, and give back, so that more girls can have the chance I have had.” – Musabbihah Areff (RF2020)
Mr. Tait brought an end to the wonderful event by sharing that he hadn’t realised how emotional he would find this moment. He was so touched by everyone’s tributes, and he shared that he believes that this programme gave him the gift of life. He also expressed the joy he felt that the final part of his career, as the founder and manager of the Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Trust, was by far his greatest. He will always cherish his involvement with all the Ruthies.
It was a farewell but it was not goodbye! We are so pleased to share that Kevin Tait has agreed to join Dr. Taban and Carolyn Steyn as an ambassador for the Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Trust!
Thank you for your ongoing support.
