Achieving eight distinctions in Matric is a moment worth celebrating — and a powerful reflection of commitment, courage and countless hours of hard work. In this Q&A, we meet Sabrina Sheng, who has turned determination into outstanding results and is now stepping confidently into her next chapter, pursuing actuarial science and the dreams she has worked so hard to realise. Congratulations on your phenomenal achievements in 2025 Sabrina, which one means the most to you?
The achievement that means the most to me is realising that I achieved everything my younger self once dreamed of, and even more. Earning distinctions in AP Statistics and Algebra was incredibly rewarding because they represent years of discipline and persistence. However, being accepted into the highly competitive Actuarial Science programme at Wits stands out the most. It marked the moment when my hard work translated into the opportunity to study my dream career, and it affirmed that the goals I once quietly hoped for are now becoming my reality.
Tell us a little bit about your background.
I was raised by a single mother who taught me independence, resilience, and the power of education from a young age. Growing up, I learned to take responsibility for myself early and to view knowledge as a tool for freedom and stability. While my environment was not always easy, it shaped my determination and work ethic. My background taught me that consistency and discipline can create opportunity, even in challenging circumstances.

What motivates you to work so hard?
I am motivated by a refusal to be average and a strong desire for continuous self-improvement in every area of my life. I strive to be well-rounded by excelling academically while also prioritising meaningful relationships, family, health, and personal growth. I am in constant competition with myself to be better than I was the day before.
I am driven by the goal of making myself proud, honouring my mother and loved ones, and creating a future that reflects discipline, balance, and purpose.
What are your aspirations after high school?
After high school, my primary aspiration is to pursue Actuarial Science and graduate with my BSc by the end of 2028, followed by an Honours degree in Actuarial Science by the end of 2029. I aim to qualify as a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa by the age of 24 to 25. Alongside my studies, I hope to grow my tutoring initiative, helping younger learners achieve their academic goals and build confidence in their abilities. Beyond academia, I aspire to travel and experience different cultures in order to broaden my perspective and understanding of the world.
What was your favourite part of high school?
My favourite part of high school was discovering my capabilities and growing into myself. Academically, I enjoyed being challenged and pushing beyond what I initially thought was possible. Outside the classroom, leadership opportunities and meaningful friendships allowed me to develop confidence, communication skills, and emotional maturity. High school was where I learned not only how to succeed academically, but also how to manage responsibility, pressure, and balance.
What or who has helped you the most to get you where you are today?
My mother has been the single greatest influence in my life. Her sacrifices, resilience, and unwavering belief in the value of education laid the foundation for everything I have achieved. She taught me discipline through example and showed me that consistency can overcome circumstance. In addition, supportive teachers and mentors through the Ruth First Scholarship who recognised my potential and challenged me academically played an important role in shaping my confidence and ambition. Ultimately, the combination of guidance, belief, and personal accountability has carried me forward.
How has getting the Ruth First Scholarship changed your life?
Receiving the Ruth First Scholarship has been life-changing, both practically and emotionally. It has eased the financial burden of education, allowing me to focus fully on my studies and long-term goals without constant financial anxiety. More importantly, it has affirmed that my efforts and perseverance are recognised and valued. The scholarship has given me confidence, security, and a deep sense of responsibility to honour the opportunity through excellence and impact.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I have been given and remain committed to using them with purpose and integrity. I believe success is not only about personal achievement, but also about uplifting others and creating pathways for those who come after me. I hope to continue growing into a person who reflects resilience, discipline, and compassion, and to make a meaningful contribution both academically and beyond
Congratulations Sabrina! We wish you everything of the best and we look forward to watching your incredible journey into the actuarial world!
