Matric Ruthies visit Wits Campus

"The University of Witwatersrand, commonly known as Wits, was home to the likes of strong women such as Ruth First and Thuli Madonsela during their tertiary education. On 8 April 2018, six of the Matric Ruth First Scholarship recipients went to Wits for a tour of the campus.

We began in Solomon Mahlangu House where we saw the breakdown of the top feeder schools to Wits and were thrilled to see that Jeppe High School for Girls was one of the major feeder schools for Wits most years.

From there we moved to Central Block where we learnt more about the admissions process and exciting scholarship offers that Wits offers its students. We also went past the Great Hall where we reminisced about the nights spent there listening to the annual Ruth First Memorial lecture, and the time we spent trying to find possible scholarship sponsors.

We toured East Campus where we saw places like the William Cullen Library, the Humanities building, the swimming pool and the Matrix.

Now filled with energy and excitement, we went on our own tour to West Campus where we saw the impressive Science Lab complex, the Commerce and Law buildings and the Law Library.

Along the way we met some previous students of JHSG who spoke to us about what it was like to be a university student and gave us advice for the journey ahead of us which we were grateful to receive.

This trip was a special day that we will treasure as it gave us the chance to see the beautiful grounds and architecture of Wits. It also provided the opportunity to visit a university we are applying to and hoping to be accepted at in order to further our education in fields such as Law, Medicine and Business."
