Our 2019 Ruth First Matrics cleaned up in their final exams, setting themselves up for an exciting 2020 and years ahead. The cheers and celebrations reverberated around the school as they collected their certificates on Wednesday 8 January. With a total of 29 distinctions among the nine girls, they all achieved at least one A and averages of between 66 and 88%.
Mandisa Mpinga was Jeppe Girls' top achiever, with 8 distinctions, (including AP English) and 97% for Physical Science. She has been accepted to do Medicine at Wits - the achievement of a dream which has been five years in the making. Melissa Nyalangu with her five distinctions is signed up to do a BSc at Wits; Ntando Manana is off to do BA Law at UCT. Tasneem Bharoochi is going to Wits to study Occupational Therapy and Marlene Angwafor is registering for Pharmacology at Rhodes. Amanda Mashingaidze is registered for B Comm Accounting at UJ.
At our recent Alumnae function, the group spoke with some poignancy of their school days and the opportunities and support they had enjoyed at Jeppe Girls. They chatted about the realities of moving away from home, the complexities of bursaries, funding, applications and offers. So many 'grown up' challenges which they are facing, for which hopefully Jeppe Girls has prepared them well. They also reflected on the realisation that although Matric was a 'big deal', life has now moved on - and the world of life post-school was waiting for them.
We are so proud of you girls, fly high, and stay in touch!
Sincere thanks are due to all our donors who have made this possible. We have replaced the 9 matriculating girls with 14 Grade 8's for 2020, so there are now 59 Ruthies currently in the school.
