In addition to school fees, our scholarship programme provides three prongs of support to our girls: the mentorship programme, career guidance and cultural enrichment, providing access to experiences which are outside what the girls are exposed to.
On Sunday 25 February, we went on our annual theatre outing to "The Colour Purple" at The Johannesburg Theatre. The show was a resounding success with all of the girls and definitely their favourite to date. Some of their comments include:
"The show left me seeing The Colour Purple everywhere!" Chiamaka Obi, 8D
"It was an insightful play reminding me that as a woman, I have the power to stand up to unjust restrictions and that I am strong enough to be myself without being shameful." Monique Teixeira, 11E
"Simply Phenomenal! The most important lesson I learnt is that despite the bad experiences, our successes will come when the time is right." Kgomotso Sekhukhune, 12E
"I gained knowledge that in every situation, you have choice, no matter what." Rayaan Mwela, 9D
"A controversial play that exposes the harsh realities of life using song and wit. It taught us more about the freedom that needs to be fought for even after liberation." Humayra Akhalwaya, 12C
"It reminded me of the intelligence, passion and ambition that defines a woman #JeppeGirlsPower" Maroushkha Maghoma, 8D
"The Colour Purple really fascinated all my senses. It told a powerful story about females not only empowering but also supporting one another through their worst. Watching theatre productions has most definitely become one of my new found hobbies and this would have never been possible without a platform such as the Ruth First Scholarship which really aims to inspire us by using the very best of the arts." Marlene Angwafor, 11D
"This play to me represented the power of God, Love, Hope, Faith, Trust and Loyalty." Phomolo Khoza, 9C
"I had never seen lights so majestic in my entire life. The casts' voices were astonishingly harmonious. I loved every minute of it. This was an unforgettable experience." Lucky Geluk, 8E
Many thanks to our sponsors who make outings such as this possible.
